(aka Parafinnum, Isoparafin, Isohexadeecane, Microcrystaline)
WHAT IS IT?
An extremely cheap and common petroleum derivative (refined crude oil petrochemical) which is found in 98% of skincare products sold in the US.
Petrochemicals contain neurotoxins which damage the nervous system. Mineral oil forms a film on the surface of your skin that cannot be absorbed, thereby blocking the pores and the skin’s natural respiration. It’s comedic genic, which means that it traps dirt and bacteria in the pores that can lead to breakouts and acne. It also blocks the absorption of vitamins/minerals/botanicals that may be in a product.
John Hopkins University named mineral oil in cosmetics and moisturizers as the number two cause of aging (first being direct exposure to sun).
It may also cause allergic reactions and dryness, as well as other skin disorders. Mineral oil, also known as soft paraffin, is the liquid form of petrolatum. Bottom line, mineral oil causes photosensitivity, and promotes sun damage and it tends to interfere with the body’s own moisturizing mechanism leading to dry, clogged and dehydrated skin. You are being sold a product that creates the very conditions that it claims to alleviate.
What about Clarins? Olay? Lancome?
…and the list goes on…
The packaging can say ‘all natural, organic, from nature.’ There are all different ways to sugarcoat words like petrolatum, paraffinium, et cetera, but in the end it all means one thing, mineral oil.
Here is the List of Over-the-Counter Products that use Mineral Oil:
- Crème De La Mer
- Estee Lauder
- Laura Mercier
- Mary Kay
- Physician’s Formula
- Tom Ford
- Urban Decay
Your skin is the body’s largest organ, and it works together with the kidneys to rid the body of toxins. However, your skin needs to be able to breathe to perform these functions. The British Medical Journal reports cancer from mineral oil. “Mineral oil coats the skin like plastic wrap, disrupting the skin’s natural immune barrier and inhibiting its ability to breathe and absorb the ‘natural moisture factor’ (moisture and nutrition).” In addition, mineral oil attracts needed moisture from cells deep inside your skin. This means that cell renewal is slowed, and collagen breaks down, and the connective tissue is destroyed. Normal cell development is slowed down and the skin ages prematurely when skin cells are robbed of moisture.
This Is Where Professional Grade Products Come In
When I was composing this list, I found it shocking and disheartening… and even alarming that some of these most trusted brands that we have all grown up with and respect contain ingredients that are known toxins. They are fueled by the publicity that they generate themselves via marketing to major Beauty Bibles (Vogue, Cosmo), using celebrities and slick campaigns to tout their excellence.
Rest assured, when receiving facials in Fort Lauderdale at Urban Retreat, you can be confident that our professional lines do not contain synthetic dyes, synthetic fragrances, mineral oil, petrolatum, lanolin, phthalates and are paraben free.
Our professional product lines are carefully chosen for the integrity of their ingredients, the technology and science behind the delivery systems, some of which are time released and penetrate to the cellular level. The ongoing education these product lines provide is what gives our customers the results they seek.
